Road Side Parking Closure: Storm Mountain Area in Big Cottonwood Canyon

Roadside Parking Closure: Storm Mountain, Challenge Buttress, and Salt Lake Slips

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has implemented a no parking zone along SR-190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This restriction applies to both sides of the road near Storm Mountain, Challenge Buttress, and the Salt Lake Slips area, and is in effect annually from November 1 through May 15.

Parking violations are currently being enforced with a $150 fine. While no parking signs have existed in this area for some time, active enforcement is now underway. For more details on seasonal road safety policies, please visit UDOT’s avalanche safety page.

The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA) is actively engaging with our partners—including the U.S. Forest Service, UDOT, and local law enforcement—to better understand the scope and reasoning behind this enforcement and its impact on public access to beloved climbing areas.

SLCA remains committed to pursuing long-term, sustainable solutions such as designated dispersed parking and improved transit options in high-use recreation corridors.

We appreciate your respectful compliance as we continue advocating for responsible and equitable access to public lands.
