About the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA)

The SLCA is a 501c3 non-profit that has been in existence since 2002. The mission is to engage as an advocate to protect outdoor climbing access and as a steward to maintain sustainable climbing resources in the Wasatch and surrounding regions.


SLCA is seeking a part-time Events, Sponsorship & Membership Coordinator who will be part of a small, dedicated team under the direction of the executive director. The SLCA does not maintain an office, however in-person connections with staff and the community are frequent. This is a part-time, partially remote position with full-time growth potential.

Location

This person must live in or around Salt Lake City or Park City and be familiar with local climbing resources as well as have access to personal computer, at home printer, and vehicle.


About this Role 

The candidate who will thrive in the Events, Sponsorship & Membership Coordinator role has a desire to learn and grow SLCA’s partnerships and community involvement opportunities with fresh and impactful ideas.


The right candidate will be responsible for inspiring the greater climbing community and its supporters to attend and engage in meaningful, mission driven, on brand events and membership donor programming that contribute to the protection and stewardship of Wasatch climbing. This fundraising role will work in a team with the staff, board of directors, and volunteers while also operating independently. 


Under the leadership of the executive director, the coordinator is responsible for the following key responsibilities:


  1. Engage face to face with the climbing community and greater outdoor recreation community on behalf of the SLCA

  2. Manage and implement all the details of SLCA’s events to ensure annual fundraising goals are met

    The role entails planning and facilitating two large scale events: SLCA’s Annual Fundraiser and the SLCA Climbing Festival, as well as a handful of other smaller events throughout the year. The coordinator ensures that all events align with the SLCA’s mission, run smoothly and efficiently, while handling any crises that arise. 

    The coordinator will plan events from conception to cleanup, including but not limited to the following: high-level event oversight including branding and visioning, working with independent contractor graphic designers, event planning, registration, event set-up, food and beverage, volunteer coordination, communication and cultivation with sponsors, vendor management, entertainment facilitation, festival clinic logistics, adherence to the budget allowed by SLCA, thanking sponsors and volunteers, accurately report on event financials and metrics, contract building, site planning, submitting necessary permits, build sponsorship packets, create post event surveys, curate run of show and talking points, connect talent to production and sound techs and build tech riders, order and design merch, get donated swag decorated for the SLCA board and staff, and more.

  3. Be the point person for existing corporate sponsorship relationships and the cultivation of new corporate sponsorships utilizing the SLCA’s Corporate Sponsorship Packet

  4. Continue the development and management of a sustainable membership program

    The goal of this position is to increase the number of members, their engagement, and donations in order to strengthen our voice in the community at large by developing  a formal and sustainable membership program. The goal is also to increase joint memberships with the Access Fund. The membership coordinator will be the lead for this program.

  5. Cultivate donor relations 

    The coordinator will utilize donor tracking systems, and send handwritten thank you cards and gifts on a monthly basis to donors.

  6. Work with the SLCA communications coordinator and contracted graphic designers to create and manage marketing plans for the events through SLCA’s marketing channels (posters, kiosks, email, social plan, etc.)

Desired Demonstrated Experience


  • Working in a non-profit in a fundraising role

  • Donor and membership data management

  • Large event management with 150+ people

  • Understanding of technical climbing and passion for the mission of protecting Wasatch climbing areas. While a high level of climbing ability is not necessary, familiarity with the culture of technical climbing is beneficial.

  • Aptitude in planning, time management, project management, and budget management

  • Building registration and ticketing platforms 

  • Managing outdoor industry sponsors and vendors 

  • Social media aptitude and use of tools including: Instagram, Facebook

  • Adept at using Google Drive, Squarespace, and MailChimp

  • Writing for social media platforms and news blogs, 100-150 words or less


Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated skills and experience in the following areas:


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or combination of 1-3 years equivalent experience in event management and donor cultivation 

  • Graphic design to create event posters and fliers using Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, or other programs

  • Effectiveness in managing membership platforms for a growing organization

  • Intimate knowledge of the outdoor industry and conservation recreation non-profit landscape

  • Familiarity and relationships with outdoor industry brands 

  • Guide outfitter and outdoor recreation trip planning


Work Term & Schedule


The coordinator's responsibilities run year-round and will start immediately upon hire. This work requires a flexible schedule. Responsibilities will include 20-29 hours per week and increase closer to the fundraiser and festival event dates. Majority of work will be performed on a computer and during events. The coordinator will be expected to attend and report at bi-monthly board meetings and other relevant partner meetings upon request of the executive director as well as a weekly staff meeting. Some availability during 9-5pm M-F as well as weekends will be required. This is a flexible hourly position.

Physical Requirements 

Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods while working at a computer; Communicating with others in person, over the phone, and via email to exchange information; Operating motor vehicles to run errands, visit job sites, attend events; Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including outdoors on uneven surfaces; Lifting or moving objects up to 35 pounds in all directions.
