ALPENBOCK LOOP & CLIMBING TRAIL ACCESS PROJECT UPDATE

ALPENBOCK LOOP & CLIMBING TRAIL ACCESS PROJECT - Phase Two As of last week, Chip & Lindsay of the the Access Fund-Jeep Conservation Team are back in lower Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC). This year, they are accompanied by trail crews from the AmeriCorp Youth, US Forest Service, Trails Utah, Single Track Trails, and Cottonwood Canyons Foundation to help the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance with the largest climbing access improvement project currently in the US. The trail crews will be working for eleven consecutive weeks this spring and we need your help to complete the technical rock work. Please consider volunteering for an upcoming Adopt a Crag.

If you haven’t checked out the new one-mile Alpenbock Loop (the trailhead leaves from the lower LCC Park & Ride) and improved access to the climbing areas such as Mexican Crack, Bong Eater, Crescent Crack, Secret Garden Boulders that we worked on last year, it’s perfect sending temps to get out.  Phase two of the project continues with work to stabilize the trail systems and staging areas at The Coffin, Cabbage Patch, The Egg, & Crack in the Woods. The Grit Mill Connector Trail is currently being built that will link the lower Little Cottonwood Park & Ride to a new parking lot, trail head, and restroom to be finished spring 2018 where the Grit Mill building once stood. Please approach The Egg, The Coffin, & Cabbage Patch Boulders from the lower LCC Park & Ride. Temporary directional signage will help you find you way.

The LCC project is not only improving this world-renowned climbing area, but it also sets a new standard for bringing a historic and complex climbing environment up to current standards of sustainable recreation and conservation management. It’s also a great example of collaborative climbing management with the US Forest Service.
