Poptire Cave Voluntary Closure Until 3/31/16
POPTIRE CAVE CLIMBERS - As many are aware, the SLCA has been working with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to address concerns over the impact of climbers using the Poptire Cave on nearby golden eagle nests. Thankfully, these conversations have not resulted in an outright closure of the area. Instead, the SLCA is strongly encouraging climbers to recognize a voluntary closure of the area through the end of the month (3/31).
Right now is the most sensitive time for nesting golden eagles and consequently climbers pose the greatest risk to eagles during this period. During this month, voluntary monitoring will be conducted in conjunction with Hawkwatch International. These results will be shared with the BLM and FWS. Assuming there is no nest activity then climbing at the Poptire Cave will be good to go at the end of the month.
The SLCA will send out an update at the end of this month. In the meantime, PLEASE RECOGNIZE THIS VOLUNTARY CLOSURE--FAILURE TO RESPECT THIS VOLUNTARY CLOSURE COULD JEOPARDIZE FUTURE ACCESS TO THIS AREA AND OTHER AREAS. If you are interested in participating in voluntary monitoring at this area, please contact Eric Chabot as echabot@hawkwatch.org.
