Trail Work: State Trail Crew Visits the Alpenbock Loop and 5-Mile Trail

During the week of June 10th, the State Trail Crew visited the Alpenbock Loop and 5-Mile Trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Their main focus was to clear the overgrown Alpenbock Loop, establish a more visible trail through the Crescent Crack rockfall zone, and perform light trail maintenance on the Gate Buttress parcel managed by the SLCA. Over four days, they accomplished a lot, as seen in some of the before and after photos below. Along with this work, keep an eye out for more way finding signs across the Alpenbock Loop and Gate Buttress. These signs will include bouldering and climbing access as well as trail signs.

The State of Utah is forward-thinking when it comes to investing in outdoor recreation. Established in 2023 under the Division of Outdoor Recreation and Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the State Trail Crew "aims to empower communities and partners, aiding them in becoming more self-reliant and efficient in sustaining their recreation assets. Our approach is not just to build but to foster a culture of maintenance and stewardship."

The Utah State Trail Crew is composed of dedicated professionals and volunteers who work year-round to maintain and improve trails across the state. They tackle a variety of tasks, from clearing overgrowth and repairing erosion to building new trails and installing signage. Their efforts ensure that Utah's extensive trail network remains safe, accessible, and enjoyable for hikers, bikers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.

Thank you to the crew, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Division of Outdoor Recreation for providing such a great, forward-thinking service! Please visit their website [here] for more information.
