The nationwide issue of aging bolts
This fall, SLCA Wasatch Anchor Replacement Initiative (WARI) Committee Member, Hayden Jamieson, was invited to Smith Rock, Oregon by the High Desert Climbers Alliance (HDCA) to assist in their fixed anchor replacement efforts. They asked Hayden to join them in hopes that he could share the knowledge he has gained through his work volunteering with WARI over the past few years. Because of the SLCA’s commitment to education and outreach, we supported Hayden’s trip to Smith Rocks. This was a perfect opportunity to share bolt replacement techniques and take part in another community’s effort to ensure the maintenance and sustainability of their bolts.
With approximately 10 volunteers from the HDCA and Hayden, they were able to replace 60+ bolts at one of the most popular crags in Smith Rock in a single day.
The SLCA hopes to continue this outreach and collaboration with other local climbing organizations in an effort to address the aging fixed hardware issue that exists across our nation’s climbing areas. You can support this effort by donating to the SLCA today or by attending one of our upcoming events.
